The present chancery premises on the Tran Hung Dao street is a landmark building located in Hanoi City, just about a kilometer away from Hanoi’s heart – the Hoan Kiem Lake. It is a heritage building and the street on which it is located is named after General Tran Hung Dao - one of the greatest Generals in Vietnamese military history. It was he who twice inflicted crushing defeats on invaders in the late 13th century.
The premises were initially hired for the then Consulate General of India in the summer of 1959. Since then, the premises have seen many changes including its own elevation as an Embassy in 1972.
The original buildings in the premises were built about 70 years back, in the first half of the twentieth century. Since then, it has undergone a few renovations including a major one in 1996-97. The buildings were fully renovated in 1997 and a multi-purpose meeting hall-cum-auditorium, named after Ho-Chi-Minh and Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru was inaugurated by the late Prime Minister of Vietnam Pham Van Dong. On either side of the Multipurpose Hall, the Embassy is housed in two buildings in the same compound.
